In a land of magic and wonder, there are two species of chickens that possess unique and mysterious qualities.

There is the Ayam Cemani, a breed that is entirely black, from the tips of its feathers to the depths of its bones. These birds hail are from the island of Java in Indonesia and are considered to be a symbol of good luck and prosperity.

The Ayam Cemani's black color is caused by a genetic condition known as fibromelanosis, which results in excessive melanin deposits. This causes the chicken to be black not only on the outside, but also on the inside, including its organs, bones, and meat. Due to its rarity, the Ayam Cemani is considered the most expensive chicken in the world.

In Indonesia, it is also considered a symbol of wealth and prestige, and is often used in traditional ceremonies. They usually live around 8-10 years and they can lay around 50-80 eggs per year.

Magic Tingwick is also home to a second breed, the Silkie chicken. Silkies are known for their fluffy, soft feathers that remind one, aptly, of silk. These chickens originate in China, where they have been prized for centuries for their unique appearance. Among Silkie chickens, the black Silkie is more rare than the other colours and has a more mysterious and mystical appearance than its counterparts. Silkie chickens usually live around 8-10 years and can lay around 100-120 eggs per year.

At Magic Tingwick, we are honoured to care for a small number of Ayam Cemani and black Silkie chickens.

Occasionally, a litter of baby black chicks will be looking for a new family that they can call their home. If you are interested in welcoming one of these magical creatures into your garden, please email us at magictingwick@gmail.com to be added to the waiting list.

Who knows, you may just discover the secret of the golden egg, a tale of magic and prosperity passed down through the ages.
